Do you listen to music to help you through your workout session? It's amazing the lift it gives you and how it can elevate your motivation if you have some grooving beats to pound the pavement to.
I have only just reacquainted myself with the ipod again after a long hiatus of just enjoying the 'peace and quiet' and escaping screaming newborns when I stepped out the door. Mainly, I use it now when I run and just love the running to the rhythm or BPM's (beats per minute) that the music dishes up. It is great too when you really pump up the volume and you can't hear yourself puffing... it kind of tricks you into a false sense of fitness!
A little trick to help you work out your BPM with whatever exercise you are doing is to go for 1 minute, count the number of steps/strokes/etc you take with your right foot/hand/arm and then multiple by two.
While on my travels seaching for new songs designed with a high cadence in mind (anything with a slow beat just annoys me and I skip to the next song), I came across some great sites that have done all the hard work for us already. They can include songs for warmups and cooldowns, with set time frames so you can pace yourself...
Sites to help with your exercise playlists
+ runhundred.com This is the webs most popular site where you can browse the song selections by genre, tempo, and era--to find the music that best fits with your particular workout routine. There is also a monthly top 10 songs as voted by the runhundred.com community.
+ jogtunes.com (and also an app available itunes for $1.99) Tunes for running, jogging, and working out exactly to the beat of your music. Links to itunes and Amazon music.
+ jog.fm (also an app on itunes for $2.99) This one is super easy and you can just pop in your exercise time and it will customise up a playlist on your selections.
+ rockmyrun.com This site has DJ remixes of songs that you can’t hear anywhere else, again it is an easy site to navigate around.
+ runningplaylist.net blog style, with ideas of songs for particular tastes that you can download from itunes
Another way to go also is to have your favourite tunes already in your folders analysed for their BPM
+ cadenceapp.com (also two apps on itunes for .99c or $1.99) Cadence desktop analyzes your iTunes music library for each songs BPM, and exports each songs BPM value into itunes. Cadence desktop has its own unique BPM detection magic wand. It also features a beat centric internet streaming radio station.
Technology is making it so easy for us to enjoy fitness, just don't spend too much time working this out rather than working out itself!!!
Do you listen to music when you exercise? Have you tried any of these sites, I would love to hear your thoughts!
