To me, Australia Day means outdoors...enjoying what Australia has to offer in regards to our national treasures...our beaches, our people, our culture...just reminding ourselves of how bloody lucky we are to live in this gifted country.
One of my proudest moments of being an Aussie came a few years ago when I was awarded an OAM (Medal of the Order of Australia), for services to the sport of Surf Lifesaving. To me, that was the pinnacle of my career, the sauce on the meat pie so to speak..And there is another great Aussie icon, the surf lifesaver, the unsung hero they say....the people that prevent us from getting into trouble at the beach weekend in, weekend out - they choose the best place for you to swim, and watch over your shoulder as you do, tip your hat next time your down at your local...
For the kids (and big kids;), they get to dress up with nearly everything that is navy, white and red and embrace the thong wearing country that we are. It really is nice to see the kids more involved these days, I can't even remember Australia Day being celebrated when I was younger.
Encouraging the kids active and outdoors is what, in my opinion the day is all about. What could be more Aussie than a good old sack race? How about a fling around the hills hoist, going for a fish and pumping a few yabbies or the game of marco polo in the pool?
The people at Bakers Delight have asked me to spread the word about their Australia Day campaign.
If you head into anyone of their 614 locations, on 26 January, they are giving away fresh baked Mini Cheesymite Scrolls to customers for free...yes free!!. There is no minimum spend or qualifier for your free mini, they just simply want you to pop your head into the bakery to help celebrate the day.
You can also visit the Bakers Delight FACEBOOK page and share a pic of a cheesy grin and your free Mini Cheesymite on Australia Day www.facebook.com/bakersdelight
To help with the promotion they are also giving one of my lucky readers 4 x $5 vouchers to spend. That has to come in handy with school starting back again soon... All you have to do is leave a comment below, and I will draw a winner via Raffle King. Simple as that...
Entries close Thursday 26th January 2012 at 7.30pm and the winner will be announced on my blog, that evening.
The lucky winner will have 48 hours to contact me to claim the prize or it will be redrawn.
Competition is open to Australian residents only.
No money was exchanged for this post, but it did fit in nicely with my story....
How do you celebrate Australia Day? What are some of their favourite outdoor activites?
