A few weeks back I noticed 3 new birds hanging out on the sandy beach at the front of our house. Firstly I was quite happy with this because they seemed to be keeping the pesky Plover's away that had previously been routinely waking us up at 4.30am (Gggrrrr!). These guys were welcome visitors extremely quiet and always busy with there long beaks plunging into the sand looking for something to eat.
I am not much of a bird watcher but something made me jump onto Google and track down who these guys are and where they're from. Within a couple of minutes I had narrowed it down to a Bar-tailed Godwit. Big deal I can hear you saying but I was very impressed to find out that these little guys are very special and unique. I felt very privileged they had dropped into our backyard.
These fellas are a migrating bird from the Northern Hemisphere, that's right, Northern! They are the marathon runners of the bird world taking on the longest non-stop flight of any feathered friend. 11,000kms, 9 days straight and they have landed on our doorstep, I feel like offering them a big pasta carb up meal after that effort!
From the China Sea to our doorstep! |
It is just amazing what interesting and unique things that occur around you. It is not often we stop to have a look and be impressed.
